Kneading Torture

  “he came in on a Sunday / every muscle aching walking in slow motion / like he’d just been hit”   These are words of a very well-known and iconic Paul Kelly song. They described me perfectly.    It was Sunday. I dragged myself off the beach, barely managing to hold on to my board. I’d paddled out, and even though the waves looked alluring and offered opportunities, there for the taking, I spectacularly failed to seize even one of those. It was all I could do to keep myself from drowning, hanging on to my board for dear life, and lying on it as exhausted as a cockroach in the last death throes of a decent dose of pesticide. Crossbone Bay

Long centuries ago, when no one knew where Australia was except the people who lived in it, hapless European would-be colonising world powers would stumble across it by accident. Tall ships would get blown off course, of course, mostly Portuguese and Dutch trading ships trying to find Indonesia and their arses in the bath tub, and they’d end up here.    The big winds would blow them hell west and crooked, till they landed on the coast, if they were lucky, or on rocks and reefs offshore if they weren’t. Those who managed to land in one piece took one look around, found nothing but sand, rocks and flies up their nose, pushed their boats back into the water as fast as they could, if they didn’t have holes in them, and bailed out again while they were still able to.   Lightning flashed across the sky. Black clouds were piled up like an avalanche of rocks waiting to crash on our heads, and rain streamed down our faces. It was coming down vertically. I stopped in mid-sentence and started counting under my breath.    one thousand, two thousand, three thousand ...    The age-old method of roughly calculating how far away the core of the thunderstorm is: count the “long seconds” between the lightning and the following thunder. First Day Of Winter

I got out of the car and froze to death instantaneously. My bare feet landed on the cold hard concrete, which immediately sucked all life blood and warmth out of me and straight into the stony uncaring world. To add insult to injury, a gale was blowing so hard the casuarina trees were laying over near-horizontally. Even though it was pitch-black dark, I could tell from the white caps on the water, the sea horses of the mythology of old, that the surf was going to be shithouse, blown hell west and crooked into nothing resembling any surfable shape. The Shirt

   Bernie was an arsehole.    He was a bully. He was built like a brick shithouse, tall, wide, massive, with bright red hair, fairy skin full of freckles with a predilection to skin cancer, and no neck. In his younger days he had played rugby, and had enjoyed smashing people down, grinding them into the ground and just generically hurting them.    A serious knee injury put an end to his playing days. He'd learned the trade of diesel mechanic, and after a punch-up on a Saturday night at his local that left a bloke in a coma with brain damage, he'd pulled the pin on living in town, or at least anywhere within reach of coppers, and he'd gone bush. The Golden Hour

  We study the conditions. We observe the weather patterns, analyse the swell, time the frequency, watch the wind, and, above all, monitor the tide like a cat stalking a particularly juicey mouse. If all else fails we sacrifice small furry animals to Huey, The God Of Surf And Violent Hangovers.    Here in our often-forgotten corner of northern WA the surf is unpredictable at best. Long flat spells in the dry season will be broken by cyclonic monsoon swell, and we’ll switch from knee-high wind-blown close-outs, our regular daily fare, to triple-overhead man-eating bone-crunching monsters at virtually no notice. The Mask

  ‘Can you please take your mask off?’      I’m sitting leisurely stretched out on a bench in the afternoon sunshine when this voice comes drifting down from above me. I’m in town getting new tyres for my car, and have got time to waste, so I’m enjoying some rare downtime. Having wandered in and out of a few shops, without stealing hardly very much at all, I’m wearing the regulation Covid-mask required now for entering premises. In spite of the big signs on all the doors and shopfront windows, politely requesting all customers to be considerate, do the right thing and cover their faces, when lining up in the post office, of all places, I hadn’t failed to notice that at least one in every four or five people were not wearing a mask. Out of Hard Fury

  Rosmerta leaned back into the shade of the eaves of he house next to her, and stared at the spectacle in front of her. A collection of some of the most stiff-headed blokes from her village were performing what they charitably though of as a dance. They’d lit a fire in the middle of the central area of the village, and were now jumping around it in a revolving circle. Sacrapos, the bard, was standing off to one side, blowing hard on his bagpipes, cheeks bulging, head bright red, eyes almost popping out of his head. To the wailing coming out of the thing the blokes moving around the fire alternatively threw their arms into the air, kicked ferociously back with their feet like a bucking horse, stamped down hard on the ground, and let out a loud “hey” everytime they pounded the ground. The Chasm

I looked over the edge and time stood still. The salt water froze over, my blood coagulated in my veins, and a hazy veil drew over the world. The clock stopped between two ticks. Below me lay nothing, a gaping chasm of emptiness, an inscrutinable ravine of darkness, in which no features could be made out. I balanced on the knife-edge high above it, in perfect equilibrium, at the exact halfway point between the See and the Saw. We had drifted here as refugees, more or less. Cast adrift at sea on a frail and unreliable vessel, chasing an elusive goal. There was three of us on this day. There was Chief Switchfoot, he of the enviable and admirable ambipodious ability to surf goofy footed or natural footed.
